Compagnoni was ranked fourth in the '97 overall World Cup standings. Untouchable in giant slalom, Compagnoni is a confident dominator of this event and took first overall last year. She also leads in slalom, for which she placed sixth in the overall World Cup standings.

So far in '97-'98, Compagnoni won her ninth straight giant slalom victory in Bormio, Italy, including the '97 Worlds title, snapping German Katja Seizinger's streak of six straight wins. Compagnoni has a good shot at the gold, but will need to contend with Martina Ertl (GER) who broke Compagnoni's record by winning the second giant slalom race later that week in Bormio.

Going into the Winter Olympics, Compagnoni is currently 4th in World Cup overall standings and 1st in giant slalom.
