Heading for the Finish Line
First position team Star & Garter confidently breezed through Checkpoint 21, the final checkpoint at Tapawera at exactly 3:50am Thursday morning, looking relatively fresh and energized despite their lack of sleep.
As the team pulled up to the checkpoint Steve Gurney gave a cheery,
"Bonjour!" to the sleepy-eyed officials as he took a seat in a reclining chair to study the map, while Kathy, Aaron and Nathan stopped to catch their breath. Race Director Geoff Hunt came out to greet them. Looking steady if a bit dazed, the team reported they had had a generally smooth run over Mt. Owen, before jovially getting at each other to "get going", and got
back on the road barely 10 minutes later.
With the finish line now just a few hours bike ride away the team who
have maintained a cracking pace throughout the race look certain to take home the first prize of $4000 and the Southern Traverse Trophy, providing all goes well over the next 50 km.
