Hi this is Robert Anderson calling from Kathmandu. It's Friday morning and I'm all set and packed to depart tomorrow for Nyalam, Tibet. Everything is all packed, I don't think it's much different from what you'd take on a normal expedition because the equipment just doesn't get any warmer really. The only thing I've taken in addition are a set of skis and some snowshoes for my Sherpas just in case it snows a bit more than we'd like.

There was a Japanese expedition to the north face a couple years ago and they got stuck for an extra couple of months there due to some deep snowfall so if that happens I'd like at least a way to escape. When you climb on the north face you can either get a permit from the Chinese Mountaineering Association or the Tibetan Mountaineering Association. Mine is through the TMA, and it's the first winter permit that they've ever issued. They are due to meet me at the border tomorrow afternoon and then I'll carry on about 30 miles up to Nyalam at about 12,500 feet. Spend two nights there, then go on to Tingri on the Tibetan Plateau at 14 and then on up to Base Camp. It's very good to be starting the journey finally.

About a month ago I had a call from my agent and it had just been cyclone weather down in India and consequently snowed in the Himalayas and everybody was helicoptering out from the mountains, and certainly nobody had any plans to go in at this time of the year. So it will be good to get going and get headed towards Base Camp. That's it from Kathmandu and I'll report back from Tibet once I'm on route to Base Camp. Bye.
