Ice Festival 2000
Schedule of Events
Dates: January 14-16, 2000
Place: Ouray, Colorado
Friday, January 14:
Friday night's festivities begin at 6 p.m. with the Welcome to Ouray
reception - complete with free munchies and beer - and indoor Gear Bazaar at
the Ouray Community Center. Later that evening renowned alpinist Jack Tackle
will present a slide show entitled Alaska Alpine Style, covering the past 20
years of his first ascents in the Alaska Range. At the conclusion of the
evening, there will be a tribute to Alex Lowe, with slides and several
speakers.
Saturday, January 15:
On Saturday, the 2000 Ouray Ice Craft Invitational Exhibition will start at 9
a.m. with the men's Pure Ice Skill and Artistry, followed by the men's
Gymnastics, Power and Vision Sport Mixed Climbing Event. The exhibition
usually lasts until late afternoon. The outdoor sponsors bazaar will go on
all day long in the Ice Park, with food and drink available as well. Several
mini-seminars on climbing technique will be conducted by San Juan Mountain
Guides in the Ice Park at various times during the day.
On Saturday night, Ouray Mountain Rescue will host its annual fundraising pasta
dinner. Later, the Gear Auction will feature a large array of climbing
equipment, technical footwear and clothing, and packs and other outdoor
paraphernalia. We hope our traditional auctioneer, Malcolm Daly of Trango
USA, will take the mike and run this event. To round out the evening, our
title sponsor, Land Rover, is hosting a party with live music provided by
Bruce Hayes and the Ragged Mountain Ramblers.
Sunday, January 16:
Sunday the women will take the ice in the Exhibition. The sponsor bazaar and
mini-seminars will go on as it did on Saturday. That night we hope to host a
sunset soak at the Ouray Hot Springs Pool before the Awards Presentations.
Then a French contingent, consisting of Patrick Gabarrou and Jean-Christophe
Lafaille, will present slide shows of their worldwide experiences featuring
climbs that are landmarks in the history of alpinism.
