Mount Vinson Massif Expedition — January 1998

It'd Be Worse in a Tent
Perfecting Hang-time in Punta Arenas

Friday, January 9, 1998 — 9:45am PST
Wally Berg says that hanging out is an important expedition skill, and that's exactly what he, Brent, John, Brock, Stuart, Romolo and Mike are doing for a fourth day in Punta Arenas, Chile.

Radio calls at 7am and 9:30am local time from the Patriot Hills base in Antarctica confirmed that weather conditions remain impossible for a landing there. Cloud cover itself is so low as to preclude a landing, although winds have improved. A stalled low pressure system over the icy continent is to blame for the bad weather, and it likely will be another day before the Alpine Ascents International team can realistically hope to leave for Antarctica. A scheduled 11am weather forecast may change that, however, so stay tuned for Wally Berg's updates from Punta Arenas.
