Tuesday, April 28, 1998 — Base Camp (17,500')
Mountain Zone, it's Wally Berg again on April 28th. I'm going up through the Icefall and onto the mountain at 3am tomorrow morning. Tonight, I'm waiting for Chungba and his staff to prepare a last meal here for me at base camp, and right after that happens,
Our hearts are with them; they're wonderful people; they are our mentors; and they're the reason we are here. We have them with us every step of the way on this mountain. They have been an inspiration to us as adventures and mountaineers. On their 58th wedding anniversary, which I might as well mention, I'm already about a day to maybe even two days late in acknowledging, but I'll give them a call anyway. On the event of that 58th wedding anniversary, we wish them the very best. If I happen to miss them on the phone in Boston, I hope they see this message and hear that from the entire team here on Everest.
