To drill a hole you strike the top of the tool with a hammer, and then twist about 1/8 turn. The hammer blow breaks the rock matrix under the tip of the bit, and twisting reorients the bit to ensure an even hole. Periodically, you remove the drill and use a small plastic tube to blow out the accumulated rock dust.
