Everest '98 Photo Gallery

Lute Jerstad walks by what is now known as Bishop's Rock (because of this photo taken by Barry Bishop) on the first American expedition to reach the summit of Everest. On May 1, 1963, with Sherpa climber Nawang Gombu, Jim Whittaker became the first American to stand on the summit and planted the flag that Jerstad is approaching.
