The bulky and sometimes claustrophobic oxygen mask covers most of the climber's face, and is hot and muggy, but allows easier breathing at altitude. Oxygen is used above 26,000' for climbing and sleeping. Usually, three bottles, lasting about 6 hours each, are used on a summit bid.
