Tacoma, WA (June 11, 1999)-- Members of the Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition today held the first North American press conference since their return from Nepal on June 1. Reporters from wire services, magazines, West Coast newspapers and television stations attended to view the artifacts recovered during the expedition and to ask questions. The news conference was held at the Washington State History Musuem in Tacoma, which is acting as caretaker for the Mallory & Irvine Expedition artifacts.
Leader Eric Simonson recapped the events of the recent climb and described how the artifacts will be cared for until the expedition, working with members of the Mallory family, ultimately pass along the artifacts to museums, the Mallory family or other appropriate agencies. Historian Jochen Hemmleb and summit climber Dave Hahn also addressed questions from the media.
