[GO BACK]

Thanks to a dry and warm (relatively speaking) winter, the answer to the puzzle has become apparent: the yellow band is not a linear feature, but rather a loop, half of which lies concealed beneath the ice at the end of the Western Cwm. The strata comprising the band lie in an approximate plane which slopes down sharply from Lhotse into the Cwm. The Khumbu Glacier has scooped through this plane making a hole in it. The edge of the hole, at least the part not covered by ice, is what we see today. In the following image I have picked out the rough shape of the band, assuming all snow and ice have been removed. —Charles Corfield (Thursday, April 15, 1999)
