Some years ago, in the aftermath of the "Is K2 higher than Everest?" fiasco,
the Italians built a research facility at Lobuche for scientists to pursue
high altitude projects. In the last two years they have opened a lodge to
visitors, which is a considerable improvement on the squalid tea-houses
at the main Lobuche settlement.
Here Peter Pilafian, the documentary director for the expedition, poses
in front of the facility. Charles Corfield (Sunday, April 4, 1999)
