Gordon Janow Marathon in the Himalayas
Sun, April 11, 1999 — Pheriche, Nepal
CLICK TO HEAR THE CALL:
Hi, it's Gordon from Alpine Ascents, April 11th. This morning we woke to the great Everest Marathon. The wind was howling as they took their places at the starting line, freezing their butts off. It was a pretty bizarre sight below the shadow of Everest and Nuptse at 16,000'.

For most of the time we've been cruising downhill, getting back into lower altitudes and moister air so it looks pretty good after two tough days of climbing Kala Pattar and then walking to Everest Base Camp; always something interesting about retracing your steps, going up and then again, coming down now. So it was a pretty enjoyable walk for most of the day. Everybody's pretty jovial and you know getting over and on with the experience.

We arrived early in the day back at Pheriche and basically sat around outside and went inside when it got cold and watched the first loads of yak dung stuffed into the stove and that's basically what's been keeping us warm these last few days. Hope everybody is well over there. We'll head to Thyangboche tomorrow and report in again. But everybody's doing well and healthy. And I'll report on the success of both Kala Pattar and Base Camp.

Gordon Janow, Trek Leader
