Gordon Janow Monasteries in the Khumbu
Tue, April 13, 1999 — Thyangboche, Nepal
CLICK TO HEAR THE CALL:
Hi, this is Gordon Janow from Alpine Ascents calling from downtown Thyangboche. It's about eight in the morning here. We just got our first views of Ama Dablam. We can also see Everest in the distance so it looks like a pretty good day for walking back to Namche.

Monastery in the Khumbu Yesterday, we came from Pheriche via Pangboche, which is one of the oldest monasteries—I think actually the oldest monastery—in the Khumbu. It's about 500 years old. It has two levels, a newer monastery and then an older one, which is pretty exciting to walk around, spend some time with the head lama there, and learn a little more about Buddhism. His English is pretty good.

Thame Monastery Pangboche is one of the three old monasteries. There's one in Thame and another one actually near Thame as well. So this was a good opportunity for us to see some of the kind of older craftsmanship, workmanship of the tonkas, and things like that, and we arrived in Thyangboche about probably two in the afternoon.

So we'll try to get into some more restful days. Few hills left to climb and so on, but we should be in Namche sometime this afternoon, and we'll give you an update then.

Gordon Janow, Trek Leader
