AAI Climbing Guide Wally Berg reports from Nepal

Wally Berg
Team Arrives in Base Camp; Sherpas Reach Camp II
Monday, April 14, 1997 -- 2pm (Base Camp)

Climbing guide Wally Berg called in to say the whole team, with the exception of leader Todd Burlson who has been delayed and is a few days behind them, had arrived in Everest Base Camp between noon and 1pm on Monday, April 14th. The weeks of planning and systematic approach to acclimatization paid-off when everyone arrived at the 17,500' destination strong and exhibiting no symptoms of altitude illness.

Berg says they had a pleasant walk from Gorak Shep, with clear skies and some of the warmest weather they've had since beginning the trek. He and Charles Corfield, who had climbed with AAI last year as well, noted the changes in the continuously shifting Khumbu glacier on the final approach. As they walked into camp, they immediately recognized old friends -- western climbers and sherpas, and Corfield was struck by the "colorful bunting of prayer flag streamers" criss-crossing the otherwise gray campsite. [Click to see a photo of prayer flags in Base Camp taken a couple of days ago.]

It's an important day for the AAI team. Aside from reaching Base Camp, 9 sherpas on the team successfully made carries to Camp I at 19,500', and 7 sherpas went to Camp II at 21,000' today, with all returning safely to Base Camp by 2pm. Establishing Camp II, the high camp from which all summit bids are based, signifies that the expedition has set its cornerstone and is well on its way for an attempt on Everest.
