Burleson Calls from Camp II at 21,500' Wednesday, April 23, 1997 -- 9am (Camp II)
Hi, this is Todd Burleson in Camp II [21,500']. It is a beautiful morning. The rest of my group is in Camp I and slowly moving up along with the sherpas. Looks like the Indonesians are moving up to Camp III [23,500'] today and going for an early summit. Hopefully within three days they'll be on top.

The valley of the Western Cwm between Camp I and Camp II heats up in the morning sun and gets extremely hot. It's been snowing every afternoon though, and the melted snow packs in well, so the snow is actually quite good. It makes it a lot easier to climb.
From Camp II you can look straight up the southwest face and see the wind swirling around the summit. Camp II is a big area, lots of expeditions set up. It's better than last year -- everybody is really working together and everybody is benefiting from the whole operation. Looking across, I can see probably 40 tents. Very peaceful this morning -- people strolling around, prayer flags, no wind. Looking down the valley, I see the sherpa working their way up from Camp I.
Today we'll probably walk up to the Lhotse Face and see how it looks, and most likely we'll go to Camp III [23,500'] tomorrow. Talk to you later.
