Expedition leader Todd Burleson reports from Nepal

Burleson
Team in Camp II; Indonesians Reach Camp III
Wednesday, April 23, 1997 -- 6pm (Camp II)

Hi, this is Todd Burleson from Camp II at 21,500'. It's overcast and blowing snow. Our whole

Camp II at 21,500'
group is in camp now. Conditions on the mountain are pretty good. It's cold up here -- about 10F degrees. Lhotse Face is covered with snow which makes it a rigorous climb. The Indonesians are now in Camp III [23,500'] preparing to attempt an early summit. On the 24th they'll go to the South Col [Camp IV at 26,300'], and if it's clear, they'll climb to the summit on the 25th. What goes on this early is that it's still quite cold here.

Boukreev
The Indonesian team is three Indonesians, three Russians, and six climbing sherpa. One of the Russians is Anatoli Boukreev [who is acting as "coach" to the Indonesian team. Click here for the exclusive interview Boukreev gave Mountain Zone correspondent Peter Potterfield a few days ago in Kathmandu.]

All of our sherpas carried up today. We have almost all of our equipment up at Camp II. Lhakpa Rita, my sirdar, and I will go to Camp III tomorrow morning.

-- Todd Burleson, Expedition Leader
