Mal Duff Found Dead In Base Camp Wednesday, April 23, 1997
Official leader of the U.K.'s 1997 Everest Expedition, Malcom Duff, was found dead in his Base Camp tent this morning on the western side of Everest in Nepal. The Scottish climber had apparently had a heart-attack and choked on vomit in his sleep. His team was one of 12 expeditions climbing on the mountain today.
Mountain Zone correspondent Peter Potterfield says he and climber Todd Burleson had gotten together with Mal on April 2nd at Mike's in Kathmandu and found him in "good spirits and fully involved with coordinating a team of sherpas to put in a route through the Ice Fall." Duff's team was the first to set the route through the Khumbu Ice Fall being used by most expeditions on the south and west side of the mountain this season. He is the 148th known person to die on Everest.
