Climbing Again Thursday, May 1, 1997 -- 3pm (Base Camp)
Today Eric Simonson, Leslie Buckland, and Greg Wilson left base camp at
3am and had a smooth trip to and a relaxing afternoon at Camp I (19,500').
Charles and Wally left at 4:30am and reached Camp II (21,500') shortly after noon. Todd
followed an hour behind and reached two at about 12:30pm. The other three will
join them there tomorrow before heading for their first night at Camp III,
(24,000') before returning to base camp to prepare for
the summit push.
Also, the summit measurement equipment passed its final test a base camp
with flying colors, and after I make some structural modifications tonight, it will be carried to Camp II for further testing tomorrow
afternoon. [Click here to find out about the science being done on Everest this year.] I have nothing but optimism at this point, that with good
weather and health continuing to bless us, we will achieve our goal of
the first true elevation measurement of this little hill towering over us.
We've been in contact with Bradford Washburn, who has requested a small
modification of our South Col (26,300') GPS installations. While this
will require the use of an extra GPS receiver/antenna/bolt setup, I have
been able to arrange for its delivery by helicopter tomorrow with the help
of the Survey of Nepal and our agent in Kathmandu, Jiban Ghimire.
We enjoyed our warmest days so far on the mountain yesterday and
today, but our latest 5 day forecast calls for a small low pressure system
to pass through the Himalayas late in the weekend, bringing light snow and
high winds. As long as we're prepared, this shouldn't be a problem.
