BULLETIN: Icelanders, British, and Nepali Have Just Left the South Col for the Summit Monday, May 19, 1997 -- 12:30pm PST
At 12:09pm (1:24am, May 20th, on Everest), three Icelanders (Bjorn Olafsson, Einar Stefansson, and Hallgrimur Magnusson), two British Clients from OTT (Chris Watts,
and Chris Brown), one British Guide (Nick Kekus), and three Sherpas (Ang Babu, Dawa, and Pemba), walked up form the South Col, followed by two members of the Nepali National Team: one Sherpa and one Magar (a middle hill tribe), who, if he succeeds, will be will be the first Magar to the top.
As they left the Col, they reported winds diminishing to zero, and clouds settling accordingly. Down here [in Base Camp], the night is different from anything we have yet seen. There's a strange cirrocumulus layer at an undeterminable altitude (apparently settling below 8,000 meters), and the moon is poking through in a way I don't think I've EVER seen anywhere in my life.
