Icelanders Fixing Ropes on South Summit Tuesday, May 20, 1997 -- 9:15pm PST Wednesday, May 21, 1997 -- 10:30am Nepal Time
The three Icelanders (Bjorn Olafsson, Einar Stefansson, and Hallgrimur Magnusson) are fixing ropes at the South Summit [28,700'] right now! The two British climbers (clients with John Tinker's OTT group) stayed in Camp IV, so three Icelanders, British guide Nick Kekus, and three Sherpa (Ang Babu, Dawa, and Pemba) are climbing. They report calm winds, and there isn't a cloud in the sky that I can see.
They should be on top in one and a half hours or so!
-- Frederick Blume, Team Scientist
ed. note: Ahead of the climbers now is a very exposed ridge leading to the Hillary Step, a short but technically challenging rock climb. From there, the summit is about 20 minutes away. Click here to see photos from past years of: (The South Summit) (Hillary Step) (The Summit Ridge)
