Over Forty Climbers Begin Their Summit Attempts Thursday, May 22, 1997 -- 11:30am PST Friday, May 23, 1997 -- 12:45am Nepal
Right now there are somewhere between 40 and 47 people on their way from the South Col to the Summit! (John Tinker and his group have gone
incommunicado, and nobody knows what they're doing, but the weather has
turned perfect, so everybody's moving). Guy Cotter's Kiwi bunch were
apparently the first out of the Col at 10:45pm, (with Breashears, Athans and the
NOVA film crew), followed by the 18-man Malaysian group at 11pm.
Mal Duff's crew has a single climber (named Mark) with a Sherpa, and the
Canadians are on the move with five climbers and two Sherpas. Tinker has another
seven (apparently) at the Col, but it remains to be seen how many
of them go up.
Like I said, the weather couldn't be better. Reports from the Col are NO
WIND, NO CLOUDS, and not too cold. It's also spectacular down here. The
forecast for tomorrow is for winds in the 30-35 knot range, so let's hope
that nothing catches this huge crowd by surprise.
