The Mountain Zone's EVEREST '97 Coverage Sponsored by Microsoft Internet Explorer

Buddhist prayer flags are strung throughout Base Camp. Most teams perform a Base Camp puja (cermony asking the Gods for permission to climb within their heights) and put up flags that are believed to "say" a prayer each time they flap in the wind. No sherpa will climb on Everest without a puja. (The Khumbu Ice Fall is directly in front, Everest on the left, and Nuptse on the right.)
