With the start of the race just a day away, there was a huge level of anticipation as competitors gathered this afternoon to hear race director and founder of the Eco-Challenge, Mark Burnett, reveal details of the 1997 Discovery Channel Eco-Challenge course.

At this afternoon's race briefing, Burnett commanded the undivided attention of 192 competitiors from 15 nations, whose months of training will be put to the test in what has been billed the toughest race ever.

Commencing at sunset tomorrow from the outback wonder of Undara Lava Tubes, the course promises sheer physical hardship and enormous spirit as it traverses 528 km of outback, rainforest and reef. For the next 7-10 days competitors will combine the event disciplines of trekking, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, rafting and sea kayaking before they cross the finish line in Cairns.

Event organiser, Burnett.
"Like never before, it will be vital for teams to navigate well. In maintaining our edge as the world's toughest adventure race, we have chosen to start the race at night. This will also make it harder for competitiors to decide when is the right time to sleep. And while many teams will be pushing on in spite of exhaustion, the side effects of disorientation and loss of judgement are damaging,"

In closing this afternoons briefing, burnett asked competitors to stop and appreciate the environment and the incredible wildlife to be seen. " You will be on an incredible journey and it is important to lift your heads and drink-in the beauty of your surroundings. And finally, remember to race safely, stay friends and try to win the race -- in that order."

Start time is 5:00pm AUS Monday.
