Team Eco-Internet of New Zealand just crossed the finish line in Cairns at about 1:15pm with the two kayaks they had
just paddled 79km from Bramston Beach. This was the end of a super-human effort which has seen them cover this 538km
course in five days and 20 hours.
After six days of trekking, canoeing, rappelling, mountain biking, rafting and sea kayaking, Team Eco-Internet has collected $25,000 (AUS) in prize money. In addressing the crowd of spectators, team captain, Robert Nagle said "Australia is a wonderful place. We've had a lot of fun. We really enjoyed this race and have some very fond memories." While maintaining their strong lead, Team Eco-Internet entered the final 79km sea kayak leg from Bramston Beach at 10:30 last night. Despite looking fit and strong, they were unable to escape the rigors of the past 6 days when they were forced to spend a compulsory 2 hours on Russell Island waiting for a new race 'passport' after theirs had been lost enroute from Bramston Beach. -- Chris Vile, Mountain Zone Kiwi Correspondent
