March 3 or 4 — We regroup and get packing for the second leg of the race, McGrath to Nome. John Stamstad and I will shake hands and work as one from here on out. We are banking on a dual effort to bring success to this joint venture. Our plan is to spit the load which will enable us to travel light and fast, sort of an alpine-style approach on a more linear level.

At this juncture in the Iditarod trials, human-powered history, statistics show two people are better than one. Helen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." Every successful crossing of the interior by human power has been done in pairs. Why mess with the odds? The trip is going to be hard enough and as everyone knows—misery loves company.

The first check point is Takotna, then Opher to Ruby by way of Cripple, this area is loaded with 1890 Klondike Gold Rush history.
