Brutsaert Bombs; Myles is the Man

Don't let anyone tell you differently - Myles Rockwell (USA, Giant) is on a mission. He won the first NORBA Downhill at Snow Summit, then spanked everyone in Sierra Nevada, Spain, and returned the new World Champion. Nothing different today - he smoked the pack and rode across the finish line with the best time, on a blown rear shock.

"Strong arms kept me alive today. My shock blew out and I was on the front tire the whole time. It was scary. I was getting so squirrely and depending on all my strength," said Rockwell.

Damn was he excited as he boarded the podium! He was waving his arms and grinning huge as the crowd cheered for the World Champion. He just couldn't wait to get his hands on the champagne either. Once he popped the cork, he took a nice long pull of the sparkly stuff. Chug, Myles, chug...you the man.

Steve Peat (GBR, Team GT) was also on today, setting his bike down ever so smoothly over the whoopties, but suddenly the sky darkened and the wind picked up. Midway through the course, his left hand slipped off the grip and sent him sailing over the bars. He crash-landed, scrambled back to his bike and pointed it.

Peat was looking at gold until this superman dive. Even after crashing, he rallied to take 2nd place, only .49 seconds behind Rockwell.

Eric Carter (USA, Team GT) was also feeling fast. "I got my mind straight, my technique dialed in and rode well," said Carter. "It was first time all week that I ran out of gear. I thought I had a broken chain until I looked down." He topped out a downhill bike! Whoa boy...where's the radar gun?

Earlier in the day, the women had bombed the same course. Clankity-clank spoke the bikes as the riders plunged down the course...some of them clipping trees as they sped by.

During qualifiers, Kathi Krause (USA, Avalanche Downhill) went shoulder to trunk with a maple, but managed to pedal through it. Moments later, she went over the bars and landed hard on the track, putting the course on hold. No further news as of Sunday night. (Click here for rider update.)

Lately, Elke Brutsaert (USA, Schwinn-Toyota) has been letting it out. She won the first NORBA stop in May and took 4th at Worlds two weeks ago.

Today, she was fastest in qualifiers. Why would she slow down for the finals? "I was hitting so hard off the dropoffs. I kept telling myself, 'No brakes, no brakes.' If I'd know that I was that far ahead, I would have chilled a little bit," she said after taking 1st.

If Missy Giove (USA, Foes/Azonic) can take 2nd with a broken foot, wait until she's fully mended. She's considering surgery to help the healing process, but that would leave her out of the racing circuit for the season, and that doesn't work for her. She'd rather deal than watch.

Tara Llanes (USA, Subaru-Specialized), who took 4th in Saturday's Dual, stitched the course for 3rd. "I think I'm more technical, but on a course like this, it's just about who wants to let go of the bike...faster is easier," she explained.

As the women gathered for champagne, the bottle slipped out of Brutsaert's hands but Giove snatched if from the stage quickly enough to hose the podium down. Brutsaert was handed a second bottle and the showers continued. Drink up...Mont St. Anne is next.
