Trails

Trails:
The inner canyon is accessed via the so-called "Corridor Trails:" The Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab Trail from the South Rim, and the North Kaibab Trail from the North Rim. There are other less heavily traveled and more remote inner canyon trails as well. All overnight travel below the rim requires a Backcountry Permit, see Reservations/Permits for more information. The Rim Trail on the South Rim offers vistas along the South Rim and a variety of rim trails are also available through the more heavily forested regions on the North Rim.

Bright Angel Trail
The trial begins on the South Rim west of Bright Angel Lodge and descends 4460ft (1360m) in 7.8mi (4.8km) below the rim. Water is available at these rest houses from May through September. Emergency phones are available year-round.
Indian Garden: Indian Garden in 4.6mi (7.4km) from the Bright Angel trailhead. Water, tables, toilets, ranger station and campsites are available. There are no supplies.
Plateau Point: The Point is 1.5mi (2.4km) beyond Indian Garden on a nearly level trail. From here you can see the Colorado River 1360ft (415km) below.
South Kaibab Trail
The trial begins on the South Rim Near Yaki Point and descends 4800ft (1460m) in 6.3mi (10.2km) to the river. There are NO campgrounds, NO water, and little shade on the way. Ascents in the summer are NOT recommended.
Cedar Ridge: Toilet.
Tonto Trail Junction: Toilet at the junction. It is 4.1mi (6.6km) via Tonto Trail to Indian Garden where there are restrooms and water.
North Kaibab Trail
The trail begins on the North Rim at the head of Roaring Springs Canyon and descends 5840ft (1780 m) in (14.2mi (22.8km) to the river. From Roaring Springs to the river the trail follows Bright Angel Creek.
Bright Angel Campground: Campsites, water, tables, restrooms and ranger station are available.
Phantom Ranch: No camping supplies available.
Ribbon Falls: Day use only. No camping. Cool waterfalls.
Cottonwood: Campsites, water, tables and restrooms are available. Campground is closed form November 1 through April 30. No supplies available.

Roads:
All main park roads are paved. A large network of gravel roads exists in the Kaibab National Forest outside the park (on both rims).
