1996 Olympic downhill gold medalist and the 1996 Overall Champion, Katja Seizinger is currently the overall World Cup leader, with seven wins (four of which are downhill) this season.

An all around phenomenon, Seizinger was ranked in the top five in nearly every ski racing discipline during the 1996/1997 season: third in slalom, second in GS, second in Super-G and fifth in downhill race. Seizinger placed second overall behind Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden in 1997.

Seizinger won six straight races before Christmas, and the last downhill in Are, Sweden before heading to Nagano.
