Editor's Note: This winter Dave "Swany" Swanwick will be checking in with MountainZone.com to share his tales of great ski adventures from around the world. Whether skiing the steeps in the backcountry or competing in freeskiing contests, his stories keep us connected to the mountains and give us inspiration to call in sick on powder days.
When Alaska is Too Big March 13, 2000 In Chamonix, Swany notices the difference between the American and European approach to filming a few days of heli skiings. March 3, 2000 Swany reports on his near-miss while filming in Verbier. "As I straight-lined out to the left, the whole face to the right broke loose..." February 23, 2000 "Now I am here in Champery, right on the boarder with France. We are so close, you can see the Mont Blanc a few ridges away and we ski into Avoriaz, France for lunch and the cheaper cuisine..." February 18, 2000 On his travels through Europe, Swany shares turns and tall tales with ski legend Gary Bigham in Chamonix, France. February 8, 2000 After skiing tons of powder everywhere he's been so far this winter, Swany's biggest priorities were hanging with friends and a little roosting on his recent visit home. Jan. 31, 2000 Swany's 35-foot air at the Gravity Games has left him with an injured lower back and a bit of a dilemma. Compete in this weekend's US Freeskiing Nationals or watch his friends have all the fun? Between events, the athletes were eating well and visiting the masseuse in hopes of keeping loose. Jan. 07, 2000 Leaving the pow for the pow, Dave Swanwick rallied his Butte posse and headed for the muthaland. Whistler that is! The land of the deep steeps, sushi and the Freeskiing Championships. Dec. 28, 1999 What do you do when it still isn't snowing in Crested Butte? Road Trip! Swany left his ice tools at home and skied the powder in Jackson Hole with the Jones brothers of Teton Gravity Research. Dec. 20, 1999 Swany appears to have taken a liking to ice climbing. While all of his buddies were skating the backcountry lakes that surround Crested Butte, he headed to Ouray, CO and the fabled ice park. Dec. 8, 1999 So the snow isn't falling and Swany is starting to get restless. What is he to do? Here is his attempt to keep himself occupied while waiting for the powder! Dec. 1, 1999 In this first edition of pro skier Dave "Swany" Swanwick's column he ponders how he became what he is. Is it that his great-grandfather taught his grandfather or that, with 150 days a year, his mom is a ski bum?
