DAY 2: McGovern Crashes
Aaron McGovern is lucky to be alive after a rag-doll spill down the lower chocolate chips. The full face helmet he was wearing saved his life — most competitors here wear helmets that do not cover their faces, but many may consider it after seeing McGovern tumble and take 65 stitches under his right eye. McGovern took a similar nasty fall in Chamonix earlier this year. After checking in with doctors here he appears to be okay, amazingly and fortunately, but will sit out the rest of the competition.
After McGovern's crash, a few other men dropped out of the competition when they also fell. Chris Murphy took a hefty fall as well after looking over the left side of a big air gully. He decided against the jump, but fell after a herringbone turn to head the other direction. He slid down the cliff when he slipped just after turning, but walked away after hiking up a ways to recover a ski.
Greg Morris had a fast, fluid, stellar line with powder shots and remained in first place during most of today until Arnaud Adam dropped onto the face for another best run of the day. Morris was 2nd today, Steph Tchiknavorian was 3rd and Shane McConkey free fell from 6,000 feet for another biggest air of the day.
All of the women had fantastic runs. Raphaelle Monod won the day, overtaking Francine Moreillon. A.J. Cargill had skied an excellent run when the light went bad forcing her to ski the face in flat light, but she pulled it off excellently with 31.6 points. Heidi Van Winkle, in her first visit to WESC, ripped it up for 2nd place on this second day. Wendy Fisher and Alison Gannett took almost the same line down the skier's left side of the pencil shoot for stellar runs, but the Euro women remain in the lead.
