Climbers Turned Back
Saturday, September 27, 1997
(Everest North Face Base Camp, Tibet)

It is, here at EVEREST BC, 11am. The big news is that SWISS MEMBER Mr. JEAN TROILLET and one Sherpa, Mr. APA SHERPA, are two hours from the SUMMIT OF EVEREST.

The weather conditions on the MOUNTAIN of EVEREST are EXCELLENT; sunny, and there is not one cloud near the mountain. That can change within minutes, but so far it is a beautiful day. Here in BC, 17500’, it is 60F in the sun.

EVERYBODY is watching TROILLET and APA on their way. Both climbers are going strong without OXYGEN. This is the ninth time APA SHERPA is going to the SUMMIT. The previous eight times APA reached the SUMMIT with OXYGEN.

I am leaving for ABC today to join my Sherpas and then go to NORTH COL and if the weather stays good we will keep going. We finally got the weather window we have been waiting for for the last 30 days. Everybody was getting discouraged because of the weather, especially the Sherpas. They were losing faith in the weather. So it’s very important for the SWISS member to SUMMIT to give everybody new hope and a psychological BOOST. I keep telling everybody we will get a good weather window; I never give up before I start; determination and persistence give everybody a good result. We must be flexible and be able to change and adapt to new situations and whoever is able to do that always achieves what he or she was set to DO.

Sept. 27/97 -2:30 pm, the AFTERNOON’S latest news. At 11:30 am, Jean TROILLET and his Sherpa, APA SHERPA, turned back from the attempt to reach the summit . They turned back from 8600m because at the point they reached at 11:30 am it was too late to reach the SUMMIT safely and return SAFELY. They are on the way down.
