History:

In 1949, while on location in Sun Valley, Idaho, Warren Miller used a borrowed Bell & Howell camera to create a film which showcased a sport many Americans had never seen before: downhill skiing. Warren Miller Films was born. It was an auspicious beginning, signaling the invention of extreme and enthusiast sports filmmaking. Chasing his dream on the side of a mountain, Warren created a new cinematic genre. Over the course of the next forty years, he delivered a legendary, breathtaking series of annual films that chronicled his adventures on snow-covered mountains all over the world.

In 1989, Kurt Miller, Warren's son, and Peter Speek, his partner, purchased Warren Miller Films. At that time, the company's sole focus was the production of the annual feature film. They have worked very hard over the past eleven years in an effort to honor and expand upon Warren's original concept, constantly trying to find new ways to deliver the thrills and beauty of the outdoors. Most importantly, they have diversified the business, challenging the company to move in exciting new directions so that it may continue to stay well ahead of the pace kept by competition.

In 1994, the company relocated from its longtime home in California to Boulder, Colorado, where it currently produces features, television specials & series, commercials, industrials, CD-ROMs, and Internet-related products. The state-of-the-art, diversified film and video production company has sales and distribution offices in Australia, the U.K., Canada, Scandinavia, and France.

In 1999, Warren Miller Films celebrated the 50th anniversary of its annual feature film. The company looks to its past with great pride and to the future with great excitement. Employees have been told countless times what a positive impact the annual feature film has had on the lives of its viewers. The annual ski and snowboard films are essentially celebrations, thrilling illustrations of what life can be like if it is lived with passion.
